My name is Dylan Benson, as the proud son of a shellfisherman, and a product of this great City, it is with great pride and excitement that I announce my candidacy for Ward 2 City Councilor.
Gloucester has been my home for all my life; it is where I was raised by my family and mentored by my teachers and neighbors and where I plan to make my future. This ward has always been my home and has a special place in my heart. My family and I lived in public housing in the ward until we were able to move to a three-family home on Summit Street. Thus, I personally understand the resilient people of Ward 2.
My education and work experience have prepared me to be an effective representative of the people of this ward. Despite dropping out of high school, I was able to receive my GED and become the first in my family to complete a bachelor’s degree. I feel lucky to have taken advantage of the community college and local state college system while maintaining my roots here on the North Shore. After completing my master’s degree, I moved home and was given the opportunity to work in the legal department of a local municipality, where I have learned the mechanics of municipal government over the past four years. I believe this experience has prepared me to serve.
As Ward 2 City Councilor, my top priority will be to actively listen and engage with all residents and business owners. I will advocate for economic growth in ways that respect our history, its people, and its traditions. As your ward councilor I will support our small businesses and our fishing industry, which are the backbone of Gloucester’s economy. Our parks and open spaces are critical to both the physical and mental health of residents. Therefore maintaining, preserving and activating the limited green spaces in our neighborhoods is of the utmost importance. I will work to ensure our ward's infrastructure is protected and maintained. As your representative on the City Council, I will work diligently to make sure our youth, our families, our seniors, and all people in Ward 2 are able to live and thrive.
Gloucester needs a new generation of leadership and a fresh perspective in local government. I look forward to meeting, listening, and having conversations with all of Ward 2.
